Beat your Writer’s Block!

It’s a nightmare for writers’! It’s an annoying thing that refuses to go away, no matter what you do! For many writers, bloggers or just about anybody who wants to write an article; the worst part of the whole writing experience is the very beginning, when you are sitting at the table staring at the blinking cursors on blank screens on your laptop or tapping your pen against your book. You can’t stop your mind from wandering off, you can’t stop being distracted by your long to-do- list, you want to write, but you can’t! Getting started is often the hardest part!!!

Well, the proverbial writer’s block afflicts everyone, so don’t get discouraged. It happens to every writer at some point and it’s easy to overcome it. While the usual tricks to tackle your creative constipation like going for a walk, eliminating distractions are helpful, they might not be possible to do always.

This is where free writing comes to the rescue. Try the act of free writing or writing continuously for a set period of time without worrying about accuracy, punctuation or usability. It is a helpful exercise that can relieve the stress of coming up with fresh ideas or the perfectly crafted sentence. It’s like a writing warm up, one that allows for rough and imperfect output, and lets the creative juices flow.

It is incredibly helpful in these situations. Here too, if you lack topics to free write about, then you are back to square one and can leave you feeling stuck. To help you out here, we put together a quick list of creative writing prompts to get you started. Pick a topic from the list below, set your alarm for 10-15 minutes and write continuously until the clock stops.

1. Mistakes are proof that you are trying, write about making mistakes.

2. Growing something and taking care of something on your own.

3. Most embarrassing moment that you had to go through in your life.

4. Something ugly; like hate, racism, etc.

5. A cause you support, it could be animal welfare, environment awareness etc.

6. Each season has something to good to offer. Write about your favourite season and why you like it. Ignore the negatives here.

7. A time you failed, write why you failed and how you would do it better now.

8. Actions speak louder than words, write your feelings on this age-old adage.

9. An object in the room you are in, it could be anything you see first in the room.

10. Where you want to be when you grow old, where do you see yourself in your

retirement phase.

11. Favourite childhood memory, what makes it memorable.

12. Sit outside and write about the sounds you hear.

13. Something that scares the daylights out of you.

14. About a time when you were truly surprised in the recent past.

15. Your morning routine, what do you do every morning.

16. Write something using the following words: inspiration, dangerous, love, child etc.

 

17. About a road trip; either one that you have taken or would like to take.

18. Pick up a dictionary, pick a word and write what it means to you.

19. Write 10 sentences that begin with “I’ll always remember”.

20. A letter to yourself that you could read in 5 years time.
