This Mother’s Day, we bring you Bollywood’s most famous mothers. These are women whose images flash in front of your eyes each time someone mentions mothers of Bollywood.

Nirupa Roy

Nirupa Roy also known as the “Queen of Misery” by critics, played a mother in over 425 films in her career spanning over 50 years. Probably the most famous dialogue in Bollywood, “Mere Paas Ma Hai”, was directed at her. In fact, she has played Amitabh Bachchan’s mother in more than 15 films!

Reema Lagoo

Without a doubt, Reema Lagoo is the most famous Rajshree mother. Reema started her career in playing a mom in Bollywood with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, where she played Juhi Chawla’s mother. This typical middle-class doting mother from Bollywood, has also played the role perfectly in blockbusters like ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ and ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’.

Fareeda Jalal

Methinks she’s the cutest mum on our list! Her role in several hit flicks like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai coupled with her bubbly nature and a distinctive method of acting has helped her leave her mark a mother in the film industry.

Zohra Sehgal

The oldest mother on our list, Zohra Sehgal has even played Amitabh Bachchan’s mother in a movie where he was portraying the role of a 60 – year old! Zohra Sehgal, before depicting her epic role as a mother, started her career as a dancer and was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship and the Padma Vibhushan.

Leela Mishra

Yes! She’s Hema Malini’s epic maasi from the cult film Sholay. Apart from her role in Sholay, she has acted in over 150 movies as a mother with hits like Khamoshi, Daag, etc.

Nargis Dutt

The mother of mothers, Nargis Dutt nailed it with her role in Mother India where she raised her two sons single handedly against all odds. Nargis Dutt, who quit the industry after her wedding to Sunil Dutt, is still fondly remembered for having played such an important role in Indian cinema.

Rakhee

“Mere Karan Arjun Aayenge”: who could forget the dialogue? EVER? She starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Kabhi Kabhi and six years after that was playing his mother in Shakti. Quite an escalation! A natural when it comes to playing the part of a mother, Rakhee has played a mother in several films like Baazigar, Soldier, Badshah, Khalnayak and the classic Ram Lakhan for which she even won a Filmfare Award.

Jaya Bachchan

A newbie on the mommies list, Jaya Bachchan is known for playing a submissive wife and a grieving mother. Her most famous role as a mother was in ‘K3G’, where she was torn between a father and son. Her notable roles as a mother also comprise films like Fiza, Kal Ho Na Ho and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.

Lalita Pawar

A major domo, yet one of the most sought-after mothers in the film industry is none other than Lalita Pawar. In a bizarre accident while filming Jung-E-Azadi, her co-star accidently slapped her very hard resulting in facial paralysis and a burst vein in her left eye. Several years later, post intensive treatment, she was left with a defective left eye forcing her to make the switch to character roles, abandoning lead roles.

Dina Pathak was Bollywood’s most famous and loved mother having played the part in more than 100 films. Dina Pathak lent her motherly charm to an endless list of movies, which wouldn’t have been as successful if it weren’t for her.
