Sibling revelry: Mapping the Bollywood gene pool

Ritika Saxena takes a look at the sibling connection in Bollywood and finds that while most work, a few others are car crashes.

Siblings are seldom seen working together except for those on our lovely planet Bollywood. The statement that acting runs in the blood doesn’t need further proof than this. There are numerous stars that hail from the same families. While some siblings make it big in Bollywood, some are just left chasing stardom. Here are 10 siblings who have worked together in the Hindi film industry.

Farhan and Zoya Akhtar

Zoya Akhtar is Farhan Akhtar’s older sister. They first worked together in Zoya’s directorial debut, Luck by Chance in 2009. When she was looking for a lead for her film, she didn’t need to look too far. For Zoya’s second film too, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Farhan played the lead along with Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol. In an interview with Rediff, their mother Honey Irani had mentioned that: “As a child, Zoya was very sensible but I would have a hard time with Farhan. He was a brat. Whether be it a toy shop as a kid or late nights in his teenage years, he was always a brat!”

Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail Khan

Salman is indeed a brother when in need. He has often come to the rescue of his younger siblings by acting in their films. Sohail has had a few successful films with Salman in the lead and Arbaaz’s career took off after Dabangg and was seen laughing all the way to the bank. Salman surely knows that being human is what keeps his family going!

Abbas and Mustan

Hailing from a family with a furniture business at their core, Abbas and Mustan wanted to do something different. They approached their film-editor uncle who helped them in the industry. Always clad in white, the brothers moved to Bollywood, after an initial stint in Gujarati movies. The two brothers live in the same house and never go on holidays without one another. Their love for each other is so immense that there is no room for competition. While one is calm, the other is hot-tempered and they seem to balance their temperaments well.

Bobby and Sunny Deol

Although there is a considerable age difference between the two Deols, this has never come between the brothers. Their bonding can be seen in films like Apne, Yamla Pagla Deewana and Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. Although Bobby has not enjoyed the same success as Sunny, their presence together on screen has entertained audiences, making them one of the most popular siblings in Bollywood.

Aamir and Faisal Khan

It is a well-known fact that all has not been well between this pair. The brothers starred together in Mela in 2000, which was declared a disaster. Prior to Mela, the brothers worked together in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. The Khan brothers’ controversy has been splashed across various mediums; while Aamir claims that Faisal has a mental disorder, Faisal claims that Aamir did all this for the ancestral property. Talk about sibling rivalry, eh?

Ekta and Tushar Kapoor

Ekta Kapoor is a name to reckon with in Indian Television and Bollywood. As the lady behind Balaji Telefilms, she has given a break to some of the biggest names in TV and is now looking to do the same in Bollywood. She has also come to her brother Tusshar Kapoor’s rescue with films like Shor In The City, The Dirty Picture and Krishna Cottage. The two share an open and frank relationship and remain aloof from each other’s personal lives. Looks like a healthy relationship!

Kajol and Rani Mukherjee

They may not be blood sisters, but they’re cousins! Having come from a respected Bollywood family and acting in movies together (the most famous of them being Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), this set of cousins has done exceptionally well for themselves.
