Bollywood’s favourite shoot locations!

The Indian film industry has its audience spread all across the globe. Thousands of films make it up to the silver screen every year and the size of audience watching these films is just infinite. A Bollywood film has the magic to turn an ordinary place into a tourist spot overnight. We take a look at five such places that seem to have become Bollywood’s favourites when it comes to shooting!

  1. Switzerland

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Yes Boss, Dhoom 3, Don 2, Biwi No. 1, Mausam, Bachna Ae Haseeno, Ajnabee, Vaastav
… phew, the list keeps going on and on! This place is definitely one that was shot in more than any other place in Indian cinema. Every Indian then wanted to go there, bring back the big bells that Kajol bought at the souvenir shop in DDLJ, or dance in the green meadows wearing a yellow saree like Sri Devi in Chandni. It can be said that Switzerland was brought onto the Bollywood map of shooting locations by Yash Raj Films. Yash Chopra had shot so many films near the lake Alpenrausch, that the lake has been christened as Chopra Lake. Also, he was awarded a Swiss honor in 2010 as his films had done so much to promote Switzerland!

  1. Goa

Goa is known to be a party destination. It is also known to be the location where most Bollywood party scenes are shot. Go Goa Gone, Ladies VS Ricky Bahl, Dil Chahta Hai, and many other films prove this to be true. The churches and forts of the place provide exactly the type of scenic beauty that is needed in our films, making this place the second most shot location of India. The rocky fort Aguada, has been an integral part of a lot of iconic scenes from Rangeela, Dil Chahta Hai, Golmaal, Dhoom and Honeymoon Travels making it a must-visit destination for the tourists. After all, who doesn’t want to sit on the dull bricks and stare into the nothingness of the sea while the sun sets?

  1. Rajasthan

Our filmmakers love unraveling new places in their films for us movie buffs. We were not surprised when they set up camp in Rajasthan, mainly Udaipur for the typical Big Fat Indian Wedding scenes of their films, and we don’t blame them for it. The place alludes royalty! Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Ram Leela were shot in the iconic royal heritage sites of Udaipur, including the Udaipur Palace, adding to its popularity among tourists. Amer Fort and Birla Mandir in Jaipur, Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur and Bada Bagh in Jaisalmer are some other places that are Bollywood favourites of Rajasthan.

  1. Spain

The reason Spain is being included in this list despite having only one film shot here, is because of the increase in the tourism that the film caused single-handedly. “During the first six months of 2011, we have seen a growth of 32 per cent in traffic, and after the release of the movie we are hopeful that we will see further growth,” said Madhu Saliankar, market analyst, Spain Tourism in Mumbai. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara showed us the beauty of Spain, which is not the country that generally comes to our mind when we think of European countries. For most Bollywood fans, Europe means Switzerland, England or maybe Italy. In fact, most tourist agencies in Spain now offer the ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Movie Beach Tour’ to Costa Brava and Lloret de Mar beaches. How amazing is that?

  1. Shimla/Manali

Yes, many films have been shot in Shimla and Manali over the years in Bollywood, but what really put it on the map, especially for the younger generation was the film, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Years after Rajesh Khanna’s Aap Ki Kasam and Rishi Kapoor’s Heena painted Manali on the cinematic canvas, this Ranbir & Deepika starrer once again made Manali the most loved tourist destination. Every youngster of the country was obsessed with climbing the snowy mountains of the place, just like their favourite stars. For the not so adventurous ones, Manali meant Kareena Kapoor joyfuly singing “Yeh Ishq Hai, Jannat Dikhaye” amidst the snow-clad mountains. Be what may, the picturesque valleys and the beautiful cottages along with the snowy mountains of this place made it Bollywood’s favourite shooting location.
